Nuku Arrives

Summary: A fresh Pyracanid arrives at the docks, seeking her future.

Cast: Nuku, Rose, Kethren, Tharsis

Air Date: 05 March 2654

Setting: Eiru, Pyracan

About two dozen fifty gallon barrels have been lashed with ropes to a series of wooden pallets and anchored with large stones, giving the town a crude, flimsy dock. As it has a tendency to sway in the wind and shake when stepped-upon, it's hardly a permenent solution. A fused sand path leads towards town.

The docks are nearing completion, with the tied barrels now covering only one section of beach, and suspended by chains connected to winches so that they can be easily raised and moved out of the way of some underwater project.

Solid support beams, dark green and easily a foot in diameter, support the docks at low tide, sunk through the sand and stone and into the bedrock beneath. The docks are only accessible when the tide is high enough to allow passage over the outer reefs. Stout chains forged of the same material support suspended walkways that bear on their underside cylinders of some likely floating material, so that the docks can adapt to unusually high or low water levels. The walkways extend to and curve around the beach, allowing for several different sizes of watercraft to berth.

Along one curve of beach, a large building of the same dark green material has been erected, an archway dipping into the waters to allow craft to be drawn in for dry docking and repair services, or shelter from ocean storms. The building has apparently been situated with care to deflect the dominant winds of the area away from it, making it more difficult to damage in a storm.

A short distance down from the green building is a second one, this easily described as a warehouse and made of solid gray cement blocks. It is the smaller of the two, but still of a good size. Large doors at one end open directly into the water while a crane is situated just inside the building.

Nuku has arrived! Looking eager and a bit lost at the same time, she wanders about looking at the crowds of people getting things done before hurrying off to the next knot of people as if searching for something.

It appears to be yet another busy morning at the docks, the sounds of construction equipment ring out across the waves. Outversers, for the most part human, hurry about, doing this and that. Progress never rests, though occasionally it naps. And speaking of napping, curled up like a common house cat, Rose has found a warm spot in the sun atop a dura-plast crate. The tubby felinoid stretches out in her sleep, apparently unperturbed by the loud hammering of construction equipment. She yawns.

Kethren walks in looking at the buildings with a practiced eye, not really noticing the people wandering about. Then hears a yawn and notices Rose "Morning!"

Nuku is finding little attention being returned from most of the hard working folks she harasses with questions they have precious little time for, and she comes wandering past again, only to pause and look at the fat cat and not canine, "You two from off world?" she blurts out with all the tact of a hurled rock.

Construction equipment that rattles the ground like fine china in an earth quake might not rouse Rose from her slumber, but Kethren manages it with a simple word. The felinoid jumps nearly three feet in the air, her tail looking bushy as a feather duster as she lands. "Oh my! Light, but you /did/ startle me..." She murmurs, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and composing herself. Rose rights herself on the crate, swinging her legs off of the side of it. She offers the human, and then the pyracani a smile which shows off her feline fangs a little too much. "Good morning! And yes, I'm a Lyiri, my homeworld is B'hira, the ice planet. I can tell you, it was an adjustment. I don't think I've stopped molting since I arrived."

Kethren smiles at Rose "Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. Sleep ok?" then looks at Nuku and smirks a bit "Off world? Off universe, off time, more like it. Couple weeks ago I was dealing with some clients in an office on Earth in the early 21st century, next thing I know I'm in Comorro with nothing but my clothes and a laser pointer. Adjusting though. It's not all that bad out here, just different."

Nuku scratches behind her head, "Uh, wow, ok," She tilts her head lightly then, "Well that's great, welcome." A moment of pause as if she considers something, "So, either of you going to be leaving soon?" Wait that came out wrong, "Not that you're not welcome as long as you want. I want to go! I mean, not like I don't like it here," Her ears sag a bit, all coming out wrong.

Placing both hand-paws on the small of her back, Rose stretches to the chorus of the popping of bones as they slip back into place. "I slept okay..." She murmurs, working the tension out of her neck before she moves onto smoothing down the fur of her tail. Her golden eyes shift from Kethren to Nuku and back again. "Oh my, you're newly rifted?" She asks Kethren. "Do stop by The Bull and Hawk if you're looking for somewhere to sleep, or information on Hiverspace. Me and the girls will be more then happy to help." Turning then to Nuku, Rose smiles brightly again. "Leave? Light, no. I've not known a home better then the one I've found here. The folks here were even kind enough to elect me as councillor!"

Tharsis arrives from Eastern Settlement.

Tharsis has arrived.

Kethren grins at Rose "Pretty recently, yeah. May have to swing by and see how the lodgings there are. Mostly I've been crashing on the beach, which isn't without its charms." and turns to Nuku "Well, I thought I might catch a shuttle to Sanctuary sometime today, but mostly I've been operating off this planet. Trip's worth it though, the view from the observation deck is wonderful."

Nuku shakes her head quickly, "Oh. I'm not phrasing this well," a moment is taken to take a breath and approach the matter again, "I'm new, in this town. I want to get a job." She leans from one foot to the other, "I'm good with my hands, and my feet. Do you know anyone hiring?" Her hands wander behind her own back, copying Rose perhaps.

"Oh my, you're newly rifted?" Turning then to Nuku, Rose smiles brightly again. "Leave? Light, no. I've not known a home better then the one I've found here. The folks here were even kind enough to elect me as councillor!"

It's morning on the docks. Construction work is loud enough to raise the dead from their graves. Scaled lizard bird things swoop and sway above the crashing waves, perhaps looking for some kind of meal, as humans move this way and that, continuing work on the docks. Awoken from her morning nap in the sun, Rose sits on a dura-plast crate, her legs dangling over one side as she converses with Nuku and Kethren. "Please, do come by!" She tells Kethren, feline whiskers twitching as she smiles just a fraction wider. "Good with your hands and feet?" Rose repeats, ears flicking as she turns her gaze to Nuku. "Well... we often need help with waiting tables at The Bull and Hawk, but it's not a job I've seen a lot of Pyracani look too closely at. A bit boring for their tastes, I would imagine."

Kethren looks at Nuku thoughtfully "Well, I can't say as I have any hiring authority, but you might inquire with Vessa, she may have use for you. Try not to get your hopes up though, I really have no idea what kind of openings we may have. But she's a good boss, so I think she'll listen at the very least. She'll probably be up and about in an hour or so, if I remember her habits properly." then looks back to Rose "I'll make a point of that in a bit. Nice place?"

Nuku tilts her head lightly, "I'm not looking for menial labor," she says with a touch of petulance, "I can work metal," claims the short fox colored canine, "Fashion weapons." she shows off one of her paws as if it would speak up for her talents, "Vessa? What does she do?"

Tharsis wanders down to the docks, pausing for a moment or two to look at the construction in progress before starting to make his way towards those already gathered around.

"Weapons?" It's clear for a moment that Rose is /trying/ not to pull a face. But she does anyway. "Yes... we have no need for weapons at the tavern. But I wish you well on your luck! Perhaps you could assist the people here in finishing construction of the docks?" She asks, hope touching her voice. The felinoid folds her hands in her lap and shuffles a little, positively soaking up the morning sun. "I like it," She tells Kethren, talking about the tavern and its lodgings. "There are many different types of room upstairs. Nothing for old Earth, I don't think, but the Lunite room has a view to die for." She leans forward on her crate a little, golden eyes spotting Tharsis. "Hello!" The overweight felinoid calls cheerfully, lifting a fuzzy hand to wave.

Kethren nods to Nuku "She's in charge of Danu Choi. Thanks to her I'm able to continue my work as an architect." and turns back to Rose with a smile "Sounds nice, alright"

"Ah," says Nuku, looking uncertain, "I will look into that then," she says with a mildly discouraged tone before she brightens right back up, "I can dance too, if you don't like weapons." Hands and feet, yes. She falls quiet again, unsure.

Tharsis returns Rose's wave as he gets closer. "Morning all. Enjoying the view? At least what little isn't blocked by the signs of progress?" he says with a grin.

"You can dance?" Rose asks, perking up as she regards the Pyracani once more. "You should /certainly/ stop by the tavern then! We always have a musician lying around somewhere. Hard enough to find them something to do, to pay for their drinks. And it's been a while since we've had a good dance." The felinoid bites her lip for a moment as she thinks about it, nodding with a hint of satisfaction. "Yes, that would be nice..." She gives a startled squeak as her attention shifts to Tharsis. "Oh! Yes. And the sun heats up the dura-plast like you wouldn't believe. I often slink down here to watch the workers and sit on the crates when I don't have a shift."

Kethren nods to Tharsis "Tis a nice view alright. Do enjoy seeing things under construction. Professional interest." then glances back at Nuku "I'll let her know to expect you, unless you'd rather I didn't of course. As I said, I'm not in any position to make guarantees."

Nuku looks towards the 'progress', then in the general direction motioned for the tavern. Different appeals. "Rose?" She pauses, Kethren addressing her, "Oh, thank you." a half moment, "Do you want my number? Might make it easier."

"Yeah, figured I'd come on down and take in the view myself... staring at all the other ships on the pad gets boring as hell after a while." Tharsis says.

"Oh, yes! Ancestors, I'm sorry. How rude of me not to introduce myself. The locals around here call me Rose. My actual name is much longer, but I don't mind Rose one bit. Especially after I learned it is the name of a pretty Earth flower. I'm a manager at the Bull and Hawk, though all that means is I'm up to my whiskers in paper work more often then I'm putting my back out mopping up spills." The overweight felinoid rubs her back slowly. "I'm not sure which one I preferred..." She shrugs and tugs on her ill-fitting shirt. "Anyway, if you need anything in Eiru, don't hesitate to come and see me. I may not be able to help, but I may no someone who can. As for getting a job, if you're interested in work around here perhaps contact Sherrif Norran. He might be able to get you contract work supplying the local law enforcement. Mrs Katrin is head of an organisation called The DMC, they might also be looking for a weaponsmith. They're really the only people I know on Eiru who might be hiring." She shifts position on her crate, her golden eyes sliding from the group of people gathered to the sea beyond the docks. Beyond where the waves crash against the land, and to the horizon, splashed with colour from the morning sun.

Kethren taps something into his PDA before looking back up at Nuku "Oh, don't worry about it, I've just told sent her a note telling her to expect you, and she's good at finding people." then looks over to Rose "I don't suppose anyone's managed to grow any close approximations of earth flowers in the garden, have they?"

"Nuku!" she suddenly blurts, "That's my name." An awkward moment of silence, "I should go check those. You've all been very kind." She offers a curtsy of sorts, "One watch over." She moves to make her retreat and to continue her wide eyed tour of the docks, and maybe check in with those potential jobs.

"I work with Katrin from time to time with DMC... they're always looking for folks, so I'd definitely give her a ring if you're looking for something to do." Tharsis says with a nod.

Rose slides deftly from her perch on the crate. She's graceful for such a large cat. It's hard to lose that predator-like movement. "Oh! I know for a fact there are several Fastheldian flowers being raised in the community gardens here. There should be roses, and other things on Comorro I would think." Rose tells Kethren with an excited nod of her head. "I hope to see you again soon, Nuku!" The overweight Lyiri offers the group a smile, her tail swaying cheerfully behind her. "I must return to work, I hadn't meant to-" Yawn. "Nap this long..."

Kethren waves to Nuku and Rose "So long, you two."
