In Normalspace kittens were the product of a union between a male and female cat.
In Hiverspace they have become the fruit of a tree called The Kitten Tree, a plant bioengineered by Alastair Hall. By all appearances and behaviour they seem like normal kittens, though the first batch was known to have a few odd traits such as eyes with a swirling pattern.
Upon death, burying the body of a cat from The Kitten Tree will enable a new Kitten Tree to grow.
