Dement Volerann is a well regarded Linguist and Engineer, perhaps best known for his affiliation and later managerial role with Amethyst Operations (co-created with Selyf Tresillian) in the Normalverse. A self-declared polymath and educated man, Dement is generally genial and tends to take life with a pinch of salt. Dement is played by James.

Who He Is

Quintessential Description

The most outstanding thing about Dement is his height, or apparently, the lack of it. Standing at a meteor 5 feet, with only 3 inches on top of that, he's no giant. If you were into that racial profiling business, you'd likely think he was an Ungstiri, or a dwarf. He has dark scruffy hair, the kind of dark scruffy hair that grows outwards, blissfully ignorant of forces like gravity, wind or hairbrushes. It appears the young man has made an effort to conceal his bushlike growth underneath a bright red beanie, though the hair in question seems to be in the middle of an escape attempt, spilling out around the edges of Dement's hat. Jumping out from a haze of fringe are his eyes, which tend to catch the light, and the observing eye, due to the unnaturally coloured yellow irises.

Dement looks skinny, in a manner that could be considered unflatteringly teenage. It is not helped by his choice of clothes, either, which are all several sizes too big for him, though there is a good chance that he is just wearing a tent. Whether this is a choice for comfort, or merely a lack of enthusiasm for dressing sensibly, Dement appears as though he was recently attacked by a crazed liposuctionist.

That outfit in question starts off with a solid pair of black hiking boots, steel capped and curiously industrial. Tucked into the top of these is a pair camo-pattern cargo trousers that are held up by a much needed belt. On the belt are a number of utility pockets and pouches that have been fitted after purchase, these include a wrench sock, a PDA, a couple of pouches and a sealed holster that hangs down against his hip. He has a bright red t-shirt tucked into his belt, which is prevented from merely floating off of his skinny frame by a very dark purple leather jacket.

Quotes

"Well, I just wondered if I could cook it with the fusion engine." Dement explains with a knowing nod and grin to the pie in question, "I can."

"I'm gonna go ahead and assume everyone's heard all about what happened in a certain submarine, with certain NEWLY DISCOVERED telepathic weeds and a certain life threatening encounter... And I won't begrudge anyone who wants to natter about it while we're all hanging about but this evening isn't about that." Dement's expression is a light smile as he looks between everyone, "It's about a change, mostly for you guys, but for me too." his voice softens, "So I've made my best attempt at cuisine and if it's good you can all tell me.. eh, if it's bad we've got rolls and stuff in the fridge." he grins, looking back to the kitchen, "I made starters for everyone, so it's a matter of pick and choose. We have either fresh eglih'glick fish in Lentil and Ipsenberry soup. With or without the fish."

What People Think Of Him

Please feel free to add your characters thoughts, as though they were asked.

Why! I simply /adore/ the fellow, though... He rather cruelly dislikes me, you know. I've tried /ever/ so hard to be good and nice. Hmmph, most of you mortals are cruel like that, though I still like this one regardless. - Anshera

Biography

An Electrical Start

Dement grew up not knowing what was beyond the hindering blockade that enveloped his homeworld but he had always wished he could travel up; up and away from Waldheim and his family. He didn't hate his parents but his relationship with his father was never stable and he longed for the freedom and independence he saw in the characters of fantasy and science fiction movies and books. He was a geek from the word go as nature programmed him with fair but oily skin, freckles, a nervous stutter and a collection of allergies.

He was hailed as a child prodigy in his school, inheriting his father's genius with electronics, mechanical objects and engineering and his mothers gift for linguistics. Thanks to this, alongside a good work attitude, he aced through the normal academia and was skipped through most of his primary and secondary education. Dement managed to get in collage/high school by the age of 13, a whole 3 years younger than most of his classmates. This did nothing for the young boys popularity, which took a notable downfall when his name started getting thrown about. Whether it was merely jealousy, or some of Dement's growing ego, people did not take kindly to him.

Into the Deep End

Though he was usually reserved, when the opportunity arose for him to travel out into the galaxy he took the chance straight away. Only having just gotten into University, Dement opted to study in Linguistics first, as it would be his ticket off. There were plenty of talented Engineers, but not all that many who could speak Terran Standard. He got through his course with high success, before he went on for two years of Engineering and Electronics courses.

He was one of the first non-political candidates to leave Waldheim, sent on a 'mission' to learn about the methods of modern spaceship Engineering in a DataSharing act. He was sent to Sivad for 4 months before being discarded with the others in his situation by one of the lecturers he was studying under. In a confused message, he was sent to Ungstiri to continue his placement, given a year long Visa to work and learn.

New Journeys

Dee met a man called Selyf Tresillian who helped provide him with further living arrangements. It was when living with Tresillian and becoming his casual partner, Dement helped him purchase the UKT Teamhair. The engineer was hired on a 'learner' mechanic. It didn't take long before he was an engineer as good as any other, his placement was ending and he was soon to go back home and become a lecturer at Berlin University. He chose not to return, however, but to continue as a permanent engineer on board the Teamhair with Tres. This caused some dispute with the University itself, who kicked him off as staff and fined him for breaking the contract details.

Virus

More time passed (as it does) and Dement got caught up with the Public Health Service so he could get some free training into a Nurse placement. It was decided on a whim, but ended up pulling him into the mess of the Thul Resequencing Virus. Foolishly, Dement traveled back to Waldheim to investigate the effects of the virus before being infected himself and placed into one of the camps that had been set up.

When Captain Marlan Ranix investigated the mentioned camps, fighter planes were ordered to bomb those infected (along with the crew of the Athena). Dement was saved and taken on board, having not yet transformed, to test the cure. He was lucky, too, for he did not go so far as transforming. In the end, Dement was also exiled from Waldheim's DataSharing Act after his involvement with the Athena, and these events caused him to denounce his Waldhemian citizenship in favor of living with Tresillian, in Resilience and on their ship. He applied for a citizenship on Ungstir and was given one in 3007.

Amethyst Operations

It was in the summer of 3007 that Dement joined with Tresillian in creating the business venture Amethyst Operations, prompted by the need to organize Team Red Branch in the Interstellar Vroomhopper Racing League and control both the UKT Seek and You Shall Find and the UKT Teamhair. To organize the company they joined in a partnership with Stereoslyat Transport, a company Tresillian had previously worked for himself. In 3008, Stereoslyat Transport was dissolved and Amethyst became fully independent.

The UKT Seek and You Shall Find was purchased with the formation of Amethyst Operations as a scientific vessel that could be hired out for field research, with a team that could both run the every day maintenance and provide consultancy on research and projects. Acting as main engineer and co-captain, Dement and Tres stayed on board this ship and hired out the UKT Teamhair to Ruin Pia.

After a few months of hit and miss success trying to get jobs with their new ship, Tresillian went missing. This hit Dement hard and he dropped off the map for a while. Though he was often seen by his crew, their work was put in stasis and many of them either departed from the company or took holiday leave. Eventually, when the official search had ended, Dement took over Amethyst Operations. He has faithfully ran the organization since then, regardless of success or value.

The Osirians

The Phyrrian War

During the Phyrrian War, Dement was working on New Luna with Goldenfur Gadgettweaker and Longwhisker Sharpear to help local teams prevent local invasive fauna from destroying the local fauna. When the news struck that the Phyrrians had become aggressors, the consensus amongst them was that the New Luna Militia was a strong enough protector and their work was valuable enough to continue. Unfortunately, when Goldenfur took it upon himself to recover a disabled Phyrrian and take it on board the Teamhair, Phyrrian sappers disabled the ship before fighters and warships bombed the landing pad until only a crater was left in its place. Goldenfur and Longwhisker were killed on board when Dement was doing field research.

Very shortly after this display of aggression, a full on skirmish between the Phyrrian forces and the New Luna Militia erupted and it's toll on the towns and cities of New Luna was heavily felt. Dement, along with many others who had been stranded by the fighting in the towns, fled further into the protection of the local jungles. He was able to survive the protracted bombardment, narrowly escaping from Phyrrian scouting ships and joining up with a camp of other refugees. Thanks to the crew of the IND Laughing Fox he was picked up outside of New Luna and taken away to Sivad where he remained during the remainder of the war.

Displacement in Hiverspace

After Dement was displaced into Hiverspace he became as reclusive as he was when he first left Waldheim, preferring to absorb himself in work over accepting the situation as it was. He spent some time attempting to study the means by which the Outversers were transferred over before his financial needs forced him to take on engineering and lingual work. He took on a few large jobs before he was able to pay for a replacement to his old ship the Teamhair.

The Teamhair has become a source of constant tinkering and upgrading, almost permanently stuck in dry-dock on Comorro's landing bay as it is rendered unusable before being fixed again. The one thing that remains consistent is the bed as Dement chooses to sleep in his small ship. On the ships computer mainframe Dement has installed Speeder, an artificial intelligence that was built in jest of Goldenfur by Tresillian when both were still alive. Designed with the specific purpose to send up the Demarian, Speeder can be tactless and annoying, but the engineer leaves him installed anyway, to keep the spirit of the Teamhair alive.
