Bounty Hunter

A bounty hunter captures fugitives for a monetary reward (bounty). It can be a dangerous profession for those who choose it and can occasionally include aggressive and violent targets. As there are rarely legal protections against injuries to non-fugitives and few legal protections against injuries to their targets it is a line of work known to draw thrill seekers and those who are down on their luck and can't find any other work. For the latter it's an even riskier job, as they are rarely prepared to deal with violent criminals.

Other names for the profession can include bail enforcement agent, fugitive recovery agent, runners, skiptracers and sweepers.

Interplanetary Bounties

Most legal bounty hunter work is restricted to local planets and systems and focuses largely on those individuals who have broken the terms of their bail. Sometimes, however, bounties may be posted on a fugitive who has escaped past the jurisdiction of the government who issued it. These are usually high profile exceptions and can often put the bounty hunter at risk of breaking the laws of whatever system governance the fugitive has fled to. As a result, interplanetary bounty hunters tend to be viewed as either reckless vigilantes or mercenaries of which many conform.

Similarly, many policing organizations have publicized 'Most Wanted' lists with rewards for information on, the safe capture of or proof of death of highly dangerous criminals. Though this kind of target would technically be considered mercenary work, many of the same agents tend to chase these given the opportunity.

Illegal Bounties

Sometimes a bounty might be posted on a person who has not broken the law by a governance or private individual (typically powerful criminal figures). These kind of bounties can either be viewed as interplanetary war crimes or simply criminal affairs and most police forces would arrest anyone caught attempting to catch or kill someone for such reasons.
