Quintessential Description

This man stands just over six feet tall and has a muscular, athletic build. He has the look of a bruiser and is probably close to 250 pounds. He wears a pair of dark blue jeans tucked into black, calf-high military boots and a maroon shirt under an unzipped leather bomber jacket. An ammunition belt, complete with a pair of pistol holsters, is looped around his waist. Each holster contains a .45-caliber sidearm. His black hair is cut short in a military style. He has a rugged, oval-shaped face and his chin is covered by a scruffy black beard.

Smartsuit Description

This humanoid, standing a little over six feet tall, wears a standard-issue Red Eclipse Mercenaries Smartsuit - red and white body armor, which completely encases the wearer from boots to helmet. It's primarily blood red, with white spots embellishing the sides of the wearer's broad chest and on top of the shoulders. Two parallel finely-inset white pin stripes scroll upwards from the boots, tracing up and along the sides of the limbs and body and meeting along the borders of the armored plates. The helmet covers the wearer's head entirely, matching the color scheme except for two blue optics where the eyes should be, presumably some sort of HUD.

A Longtooth BR1 12mm battle rifle is slung across its back, and an ammunition belt, complete with a pair of pistol holsters, is looped around its waist. Each holster contains a .45-calibre automatic pistol.

Biography

James Sterling was born in 1974 in a southeastern neighbourhood of Sydney, Australia. Growing up, he grew to hate his father, who occasionally took his drunken frustrations out on James and on his mother, who bore it with outward stoicism. She went to hospital a few times during James' childhood because of the treatment she received from her husband. By the time James was eighteen and had graduated high school, he had had enough. Unable to convince his mother to seek help for his father's abusive behaviour, he left home to join the Australian Army. He was later selected to the Australian Special Air Service, where he earned the rank of Lieutenant.

James has worked for various unseemly characters and organisations over the years. Most notably, he served with a band of mercenaries who worked in Africa during the late 1990s. He was involved in drugs smuggling, smuggling of conflict diamonds, and human trafficking.

James was a soldier in command of a private military company based in Brussels, Belgium, a city which was plagued with the heinous activities of an ultra-violent gang known as the Rax. James believes they were under the influence of some new drug. He was in the middle of a pitched battle with these gang members, about to be caught in a massive explosion as a heating oil tank in the gang's headquarters' basement was hit with a poorly-tossed grenade when he was rifted out.

Hobbies:

James' favourite pastimes include booze, women, and gambling. He developed a taste for the finer things while a mercenary in Africa and Europe. He's also fond of some sports, including Rugby League and European and Australian football.

Personality:

James is impulsive. He frequently acts before finding all the facts or thinking things through. He is also extremely stubborn. Once he sets his mind to a course of action there's little that can stop him going through with his plans.

James bears a lot of guilt for his actions whilst a mercenary in Africa. He speaks about this to virtually no one. In a way he's trying to make up for the terrible things he's done in his past through his pursuit of the Rax gang. He maintained his ties to illicit sources, as he'd grown used to tapping their resources when legal means failed. Before he was rifted, he had made an effort to wean himself away from these, but having fallen in with Jocaira and the Red Eclipse Mercenaries has eroded most of his will to carry through with that particular plan. Jocaira has all but convinced him that, since his old life is hundreds of years and at least one universe behind him, he need not worry about it and simply start fresh:

"It is se new life, ne? You can forget all of se bad sings, sey are all worlds away now. Everyone who evair 'urt you is dead. Every mistake you evair made is gone. It is a new world wis many new sings to find and do."
